As Good as it Gets

Welcome to the new chapter in Automobiles.

For years, the automotive industry has used hybrid technology to reduce emissions and dial back the harmful effects that a standard gas combustion engine had on the environment.  But leave it to McLaren to take this idea, flip it on its head and turn the dial up to eleven.  McLaren instead took a electric engine and married it to their already insane engines, and from this insanity the McLaren P1, was born.

The granddaddy of them all, the McLaren P1.

This is British engineering at its absolute best.  The P1 was designed to be a lightweight, all out assault on the race track.

The car was designed to be a light as possible, everything is made out of carbon fiber.  In the inside of the P1 there is no glove box, there's not even carpet.  The glass used in the windows, is only 3 1/2 millimeters thick.  That is 1 1/2 millimeter thinner than the glass in the cars we drive.  There is no lacquer on the exposed carbon fiber trim, because it saves 1 1/2 kilograms.  The monocage tub, were the driver and passage sits, only weights 90 kilograms.  The entire body of the car is only made up of five pieces.  Which mean less glue and bolts to hold it all together, which in return means less weight.  And for what bolts and other metal bits the P1 does have, they are all made of titanium. The whole car altogether only weighs 1490 kilograms.

The car has two engines, the first is the mid-mounted twin-turbo V-8 that makes 727 hp.  The second is the electric motor that makes an additional 176 hp.  The combined total output is 903 hp and 722 lb-ft of torque.  Since the P1 is so light, the car can rocket to 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds.  124 mph clocks in at 6.8 seconds.  The quarter miles comes in at 9.8 seconds, at 152 mph.  the P1 will keep on going to an electronically limited top speed of 218 mph.

The only significant weight comes from the air rushing over the car.  The car's aero dynamics are what keep that car planted to the road.  As the car gains speed the massive rear wing deploys.  The rear wing can produce a peek of 600 kg of downforce.  But after the car reaches 156 mph the rear wing slightly retracts, it does this because the force of the wind is so great that it would destroy the car's suspension.

This car is the absolute future of super cars.  With the emissions problems we have, we can not have screaming V-12's that only get 6 miles to the gallon anymore.  So instead of laying down and dying, the automotive industry does what is always has, innovate.  And the result is one of the most outrageous cars of our time.

Corvette Z06

Everyone grab the apple pie, and crack open a coca cola because one of America's super cars has returned.  The Corvette Z06 is one of the baddest performance vehicles out there.  This car puts the likes of Ferrari and McLaren to shame.  And the Corvette does this with a price tag of a little over 100,000 dollars.  Thats a fraction of what this cars competition cost, and it mops the floor with them.

Carlos Lago over at Motor Trend has the review of the car, and man is it glorious.

It has been a good week for American sports cars, with the new Mustang, and ATS-V, its a good time for all car enthusiasts.

The New ATS-V

The LA Auto show is proving to be the holy grail of american performance vehicles.  First, Ford wowed with the new 350GT, and now Cadillac is ready for the spot light.

The standard ATS in no slouch.  It has held its own against is german rivals, in the luxury sedan market.  But with the introduction of BMW'S M3 and M4, Cadillac is ready to take on the competition with its own luxury performance contender.

Introducing the New Cadillac ATS-V

The ATS-V comes in both coupe and sedan versions.  Both the coupe and sedan are powered by a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6, that makes 455 hp and 445 1b-ft of torque.  Zero to sixty clocks in a 3.9 seconds and the ATS-V will keep on, eventually hitting a top speed of over 185 mph.

The engine comes mated with an option of either a six-speed manual, or GM's new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. GM clams that their new automatic transmission is faster than Porsche's PDK; which is the benchmark of all automatic transmissions.

The car uses GM's third generation of Magnetic Ride control, witch allows forty percent faster damping response.  That means that the car can adjust dampening every inch of road travel,  down from the three inches of the last generation.

The mechanical components are not the only part of the ATS to receive upgrades.  The outside of the car gets some serious new upgrades as well.  Both ATS-V models get a new ventilated carbon fiber hood. A huge new grill, that allows fifty percent more air-flow than the standard ATS.  Other body upgrades include, brake-cooling ducts, a carbon-fiber chin splitter, flared and vented fenders, a rear diffuser and a spoiler.

All these new upgrades resulted in the ATS-V being Cadillac's fastest car around the Nurburgring ring, ever.

All I can say is, watch your back BMW.

A Legend Reborn

50 years ago, Ford introduced the first ever mustang, and soon followed up with a performance model, the original Shelby GT350.  Fast forward to today, Ford is proving that the past does repeat itself.  Because the all new 2015 Mustang has just hit the showrooms and now Ford is introducing their new performance Mustang, and is resurrecting a legend.

Introducing the new Shelby GT350

Making is debut at last weeks LA Auto Show.

This is the track focused version of the new Mustang, and it has its eye on very specific vehicle, Motor trend's best driver's car the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.

The new and improved pony gets its power from a 5.2-liter V-8.  Ford hasn't released exact details, but Ford has promised that the GT350 will make over 500 hp, and about 400 lb-ft of tourque.  It is the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Ford has ever put is a Mustang.

The rest of the car has been tweaked over the standard mustang as well.  Every thing from a lower hood, a wider front track, stiffer suspension, and bigger brakes are new.  In fact every piece of the sheet metal in front of the windshield is brand new, and exclusive to the GT350.  The hood and the front fenders are made of aluminum to help save weight.  The fenders are also wider to help accommodate the brand new, specially developed Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The GT350 is wider and lower than the standard Mustang, sitting two inches lower.

The suspension is also brand new, not only for the Mustang, but for the entire Ford fleet.  The mustang brings with it MagneRide adaptive dampers, which is found in cars like the Ferrari 458.  The system monitors the road conditions and driving inputs every 8 milliseconds, and can adjust the liquid viscosity in the dampers every 10 milliseconds.

This new mustang on paper, sounds like it will be a formidable thorn in the Camaro's side.  We will just have to see if the Mustang can dethrone the king of muscle cars.

SEMA 2014

Every year the automotive industry looses their suit and ties and heads for Las Vegas.  For one week in November, companies all head to one of the most exciting cars shows of the year, the Specialty Equipment Market Association or SEMA. At this show, the name of the game is customization. And here the crazier the car the better.  Each car company pulls out all the stops and turns their normal everyday cars, into insane show cars.  The point of the show is for one, to prove that the big wigs at the car companies have a sense of humor.  But the main point is that aftermarket companies show off what you can buy for your car to make it look the the show cars.  Sound systems, body kits, hydraulics, and 4 foot spoiler that makes you look like an idiot, you name it, it's there.  With over 2000 companies showing up and over a million square feet of purely cars taking over the Las Vegas convention center, odds are that you will find something you like.

Ford teases something

A new teaser has just been released by Ford.  The teaser includes this image, and the first of five teaser videos..  The teaser image has the date of November 17th, along with what looks to be the back end of a roofline.  And what a coincidence the date, Nov 17th is the day before the LA Auto show opens its door to the press.  The video that accompanied the teaser payed homage to Ford's racing legacy.
So I'm sure that the car they unveil will be performance related.

1965 Shelby G.T. 350
Now that brings us to the question of what car is ford going to announce?  A lot of speculation turns towards the return of the legendary shelby GT350 mustang.  I on the other hand think it might be the successor to the Ford GT. Or who knows, Ford might surprise us with a car that no one was expecting. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Cheaters beware

This hurts my heart....watching a Ferrari 458 Italia getting hit with a sledge hammer is hard to watch. Luckily the commercial is for wheels, and the Ferrari used probably isn't real.  For one, Ferrari would probably have sued for the use of their car, because they sue everyone, it's Ferrari.  Secondly carbon fiber doesn't dent like what we see in the video.
